September 29, 1947 marked the first Carnegie Hall appearance of Dizzy Gillespie’s Big Band and the Dizzy Gillespie Quintet, with Charlie Parker and Ella Fitzgerald joining as special guests. The concert presented both Parker and Gillespie at what many consider to be the peak of their creativity. Although these two jazz greats had performed together throughout the early 1940’s, this appearance was a reunion of sorts for the pair, since it represents their first joint appearance following their 1946 split in California.
According to Doug Ramsey of Jazz Times in reviewing Blue Note Records’ “Diz’N’Bird at Carnegie Hall” (which includes tracks found on these two acetates) “The Parker-Gillespie tracks are among the crown jewels of Twentieth Century music. No two musicians ever played more closely together. The unison passages are as breathtaking as the solos, which are products of genius.”
Estimate: $2,000 - $3,000
